Virtual wifi is a less known feature that comes with windows 7. What virtual wifi does is, it converts your windows 7 computer into a wifi hotspot. This is really useful for purposes like converting wired internet connection into wireless or extending the wireless network range. There are lots of software out there that does this, but in this tutorial we are going to use a windows’ inbuilt feature instead of a software. Let us take a look at setting up the virtual wifi on windows 7. Make sure your computer is connected to the internet.
Note: Virtual Wifi does not work on all the windows 7 computers.
Step 1: setting up the virtual WiFi
open command prompt (cmd) as the administrator and run the following command:
netsh wlan set hostednetwork mode=allow ssid=test key=password
you have to replace test with what name you would like to give your hotspot’s access point.
Replace password with your own password for the access point. Once all that is done, run the command. If the command runs successfully you will get the following message:
the hosted network mode has been set to allow.
the SSID of the hosted network has been successfully changed.
The user key passphrase of the hosted network has been successfully changed
Now we have successfully set up our virtual wifi. Let us continue to step two.
Step 2: changing the sharing settings
We need to enable internet connection sharing in order to switch on the virtual wifi. To enable internet connection sharing:
Open Network and Sharing center and click on the wireless network connection as shown in the image:
Now a windows will pop up. click on properties on that window.
When clicked on properties, another window will pop up. In that window, go to the sharing tab.
Under the sharing tab, make sure both the check boxes are ticked, save and close it.
That is all and we have successfully enabled the internet sharing option.
Step 4: Switching on the Virtual wifi
Now that we have set up everything we need to enable the virtual wifi, let us switch the virtual wifi on.
Open Command Prompt as the administrator and run the following command:
netsh wlan start hostednetwork
You have successfully enable the virtual Wifi. Now if you open network and sharing center,
you will find a new wireless connection being setup. Once that is done you can use the virtual wifi on
Step 5: Switching off the virtual wifi
Once you have done using your newly set up wifi, you need to switch it off. To switch in off run command prompt as the administrator and run the following command
netsh wlan stop hostednetwork
For your next use you can restart it with step four. setting up virtual wifi is as simple as that.
